At the beginning of February, Facebook filed their S-1 to the US Securities and Exchange Commission in preparation for the IPO.
Contained within it were plenty of details regarding Facebook’s usage, current reach worldwide, and how profitable the company is. The S-1 itself is a massive document, so we have put together some of the key facts that may truly astonish you.
1. Usage
- As of December 2011, Facebook reportedly has 845 million monthly active users worldwide, and 483 million daily active users worldwide.
- Approximately 80% of Facebook’s monthly users are outside of the US and Canada.
- At the end of 2011, there were 1 billion friend connections.
- There were 2.7 billion likes and comments per day in Q4 of 2011.
2. Global reach
- Facebook is available in more than 70 languages.
- In the US and UK, Facebook has a penetration rate of 60%.
- Facebook’s strongest penetration rates exist in countries such as Chile, Turkey, and Venezuela, clocking in at over 80%.
- Due to China’s censorship of Facebook, this is where Facebook’s penetration rate is the lowest at 0%.
- Unfortunately, no official estimate is given for Australia. However, according to Social Bakers, Facebook’s penetration rate in Australia is currently around 50%.
3. Facebook employers/employees
- Facebook had 3,200 employees at the end of 2011, a 50% increase over 2010.
- Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg earns $500,000 a year.
- Starting at the beginning of 2013, Zuckerberg plans to take on a salary of $1 a year, much like Steve Jobs did with Apple.
- Regardless of his salary, Zuckerberg owns 28% of Facebook, which could translate to about $28 billion in worth after they sell the company’s first stock to the public.
4. Financial information
- Facebook’s been profitable for the past three years. They earned a profit of $1 billion in 2011.
- Facebook reported a revenue of $3.711 billion in 2011.
- 85% of Facebook’s revenue comes from advertising.
- Zynga, the developer of Farmville, accounts for 12% of Facebook’s revenue.
