How and When to Post on Facebook for Business.
A recent study conducted by Momentus Media looked into the engagement and interaction rates on Facebook pages.
Their study of the top 20,000 Facebook pages resulted in some handy tips about what techniques work when posting on Facebook.
Posting on weekends and off-peak times show high interaction
Thursday is the most popular posting day, with a 41% increase from posts on Wednesday to Thursday. However, Saturday and Sunday have the most interaction, even though posts on these days are less frequent. There is also a 45% difference in interaction rate from Thursday to Sunday.
High post frequency shows high interaction
When looking at how often admins post, 15% post 0-1 posts per day, 40% post 1-2 posts, and 18% post 2-3. This shows the majority of admins are only posting around once per day.
Despite this, the overall interaction rate of a day will continue to rise even if the admin posts 12 posts a day. This allows admins to reach a larger percentage of their audience, as people will be logging on at different times of day. If the admin only posts once, the post might be missed all together.
Photos generate 200% higher interaction rates than links
When looking at what is posted on Facebook, the highest type of content is links, followed by statuses and then photos. However, photos generate the highest interaction rate, 200% more than the lowest interaction, links.
Asking users to "like" gets 216% higher interaction rate
Should you ask people to comment on or like your status? Out of 49,266 pages, 292 posts contained “comment”, 361 contained “like”, and 48,613 didn’t contain “comment” or “like”.
Despite this, posts containing “like” will generate most interaction, followed by “comment”, with no calls to action being final. Next time you make a post, ask people to like or comment on it.
Facebook pages: Asking questions doesn’t increase interaction rate
10,937 status posts were divided into what contained a question (2,608) and what didn’t (8,329). Surprisingly, people asking questions get a 23% lower interaction rate. This shows that Facebook admins who want the highest comment rate should just ask for comments rather than questions.
Lengthy Facebook status updates show higher interaction rates
Facebook posts with 40 - 140 characters are most common, peaking at 60 characters. However after 140 characters there is a sharp decline. A reason for this could be Twitter. By sticking to Twitter’s 140 character limit, users will be able to post on both Twitter and Facebook without modifying the post. However interaction rates continue to rise with the word count, so don’t hesitate to write a long Facebook status.
50% of clicks happen within one hour
When looking at over 250,000 clicks, it was found that 50% of clicks happen within 62 minutes, and 90% of clicks will happen within 9 hours.
